The Wii U, originally code named "Project Café", is a home console created by Nintendo and initially released in 2012. The Wii U stands out from other consoles of its generations by utilizing a large, tablet-like controller. Its unique controller, dubbed the Wii U Gamepad, features a touchscreen that also allows for on- and off-television play. In addition to the Wii U Gamepad, the Wii U is also compatible with a new Wii U Pro Controller, as well as every controller that is also compatible with the Nintendo Wii (an exception being the GameCube controller, which is not natively compatible with the Wii U, but is compatible with an external adapter released alongside Super Smash Bros. for Wii U).
