The story mode of Mortal Kombat XII contains 20 chapters total, telling a story that takes place 10 years after the events of its predecessor, Mortal Kombat 11 (the real video game). It is the epic conclusion of the Mortal Kombat Saga. It also includes the free DLC character stories pack for each playable characters (except the guest characters).

Story Mode

1. Great Kung Lao- As the ancestor of Liu Kang and Kung Lao, he must prepare for Mortal Kombat. After Fire God Liu Kang teaches him combat, his ancestor starts to face him. At the end, Fire God Liu Kang was very humble and he tells about his ancestor's future. As the Great Kung Lao faces Goro, Goro was defeated, but ran away and was never seen again. As for that, Shang Tsung appeared to face the Great Kung Lao, Shang Tsung gets defeated by him again. But then, suddenly, Onaga was brought back to life, for his revenge on Shujinko, and Nightwolf. But they were never around either, Onaga was pleased to see the ancestor of Liu Kang, so later on the fight, Onaga was defeated after his final blow. Onaga was never gonna be brought back, if so, then I would have to be the gods who will stop him.

2. Kung Jin & Blaze- Later on, the Wind God Kung Lao meets his cousin again teaching him the way of the shaolin again after dying and never really being able to defend Earthrealm, but as the demigod was easily defeated, he was humble. Kung Jin then later on met Blaze the one who needed help. In the dawn of time, Blaze and Kreenik had a conversation and fought together, but Rain wanted to keep fighting him. Both Kreenik, and Rain were defeated. But when Kreenik wasn't down, he mind-controlled Blaze and Kung Jin defeated him, but Havik came along, he was certainly impressed, Kung Jin fights one of the Blood Code but was mind-controlled also.

3. Kurtis Stryker & Kabal- In the city, again, we see Stryker and Kabal defending Earthrealm again by warriors/monsters. When two of the evil demigods came, (Rain, the demigod of water and lightning < half-brother of Taven and Daegon). (Tremor, the demigod of the Earth-elemental who used to be in the Black Dragon) they needed them behind bars so they can take the throne of Outworld, and all the other realms, first Earthrealm. As Rain was defeated, both were having a hard time trying to fight the earth-elemental. Tremor knew that they were easy to fight, but as he thought of that, he was defeated. Stryker needed them to go to Special Forces and be under arrest. But they escaped quickly. Next, Motaro, went attacking some of Special Forces, Stryker kept shooting at him, but Motaro created a shield to block him from the bullets, Sheeva. Kabal took out his hook swords. Which ever defeated him. He was left on the street. As they back up, Sheeva hopped towards Motaro and went over to Kabal and Stryker, knowing she would get defeated by them like the demigods, and Motaro. Suddenly, Stryker wasn't feeling so good, so the mysterious thing that happened was that his dark clone came through, Stryker was down, but Kabal was still fighting. Then Kabal had to take Stryker to Special Forces.

4. Kovu- The son of Kano and his first pupil, Kovu is a character who trained for combat, attacking Special Forces and his father revenge. Kovu was also full of greed but never had the chance to take on anyone. Kovu first attacks Special Forces; Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, Stryker, Jax Briggs, and Cassie Cage, all were defeated. He needed all the money and the action he could take. Who will save them??? Three guesses---Kabal???, Johnny Cage???, or the Gods???,

5. Johnny Cage- As Kovu picked up Kano's knife, he wanted to kill someone, but as Johnny Cage tried to escape, Johnny Cage used his green aura for battle, Johnny Cage had to first face Leon Black (the son of Erron Black), who wanted revenge for his father's death and fight since MK11. But Leon Black gets defeated. Kovu was next for defeat, he was automatically since learning from his father. Johnny Cage had to break/loose the chains off of everyone in Special Forces, they had to ran away and fight most of the Black Dragon. As we now know, the Dark Clones of him and Sonya Blade appeared as well, Johnny Cage had to fight the clones, behind them was Smoke's/Enenra's revenant. Like before in MKX, he was defeated. They had to run away and make the escape to recover. Johnny Cage, the rest of Special Forces and Fire God Liu Kang had a conversation of defending Earthrealm.

6. Ashrah & Li mei- Ashrah was in the Netherrealm fighting Ermac, but Ermac had almost killed, as Li mei tracked down any danger, Li mei went in the Netherrealm to fight Ermac as well. Li mei knew that Ermac's weakness was/is the Netherrealm. Ermac was down, they had to move on/conversation. Bi-han invisibly appeared for a moment hitting Ashrah, and Li mei. Li mei and Ashrah attacked but were grabbed hold on to Bi-han's clones like how Jacqui Briggs and Jax Briggs fought the clones in MK11, Bi-han was defeated. Bi-han got up to introduce the dark clones that Li mei and Ashrah needed to fight. First it was their clones, next Kitana's and Liu Kang's. They were all down, but Bi-han ran away. Ashrah thanks Li mei for helping her fight Ermac, Bi-han and the dark clones.

7. Subzero II & Smoke/Enenra- Sub Zero has a conversation with Smoke about Bi-han, wanting to redeem him, but it wasn't the right time to bring him back defending Earthrealm. Smoke corrects him, but then Cyrax was rebuilt, but by neither of them. Bi-han was right behind fighting against the two leftover Lin Kuei. Cyrax was defeated first and next Bi-han. As they tried taking Bi-han back to the Lin Kuei, but they first needed to re-program Cyrax so he would go back to the Lin Kuei (normal) with no more cybernetics. But four warriors came along heading towards Sub Zero and Smoke; Scorpion (Dark Clone), Smoke's revenant, Frost and Hotaru. Frost and Hotaru wanted revenge and obeys the Dragon King, Onaga. But Scorpion and the revenant of Smoke attacked, but were defeated. Smoke fought Frost and Hotaru fought Sub Zero, but got back and was ready for round two of whoever fought the other, Frost and Hotaru was defeated. They went back to reprogramming Cyrax, but Bi-han teleported next to them, kicked them and took Cyrax.

8. Chameleon- The Unknown Saurian, Chameleon came back to Earthrealm wanting his realm back from Outworld. Shao Kahn was killed before in Mk11 even Sindel when Shang Tsung faced them and Kronika. Fire God Liu Kang had to stop him, but still Chameleon didn't want to wait that long to find Shang Tsung. Chameleon snook behind Sub Zero and Smoke and fought them, when Smoke was down, Sub Zero was too, but Chameleon was confused that they were not Shang Tsung. Chameleon apologizes to them, Sub Zero wanted to know his name but Chameleon kept it secret, telling them the story of his life in his lost realm Zaterra. Sub Zero and Smoke follow Chameleon to Outworld to find Shang Tsung, Reptile blocked Chameleon with his invisibility, Chameleon noticed, Reptile knew Chameleon for a long time and fought him. After the conversation, Reptile was finished. Tanya followed and watched them standing their, Chameleon was about to capture Shang Tsung from right behind, Sub Zero froze him quickly, but with Shang Tsung's sorcery, he knocked out Sub Zero and Smoke faced the Sorcerer and he used his smoke manipulation to blindfold him and attacked from behind the sorcerer then almost took his soul, Chameleon punched from behind and fought Tanya again. Tanya and Shang Tsung were then defeated, Chameleon held Shang Tsung up by the throat and told him to give him back his realm. Mileena went to check on Shang Tsung and Chameleon watched her go by, she was also defeated, Shang Tsung warns him, wanting his realm back but Shang Tsung was left in bars.

9. Kitana Kahn- When Chameleon and the 2 Lin Kuei came by to Kitana, Kitana was very curious and they vowed to her. Chameleon told/warned her that Shang Tsung cannot die before he gives him his realm back and will never attack Edenia and other realms under the rule of Outworld. He also told that Rain wanted to take throne as well, even for that, Skarlet overheard the conversation. As Chameleon put him in chains, Skarlet used her blood magic on Kitana. Kitana had to face Skarlet so she would still have the throne, this showed that Skarlet was defeated. Then, Kollector escaped from behind imprisonment and jumped out to the slaved, Kitana also defeated him, Rain and Mileena then worked together to fight Kitana but as Rain was defeated, Mileena was too. Motaro had no choice but to protect to princess and prince of Edenia/Outworld. Motaro was too also defeated. Kitana made the choice to put them behind imprisonment. Sub Zero and Smoke had to stay in Outworld to guard the prisoners; Skarlet, Rain, Mileena, Motaro, and Kollector.

10. Scorpion- As Scorpion was teaching Takeda the way of the Shiryu, Takeda lost to Scorpion's power. When Takeda was done training, Scorpion had to tell him of what happened to Hanzo Hasashi, where he is, who killed him and how Scorpion changed throughout the 2nd timeline. Takeda was upset to hear, but suddenly, the dark clone of Scorpion walked towards them. Scorpion had to face his dark clone, no matter what, Scorpion (Dark Clone) was defeated. At any chance, Havik was impressed to Scorpion. As Havik was still mind controlling Kung Jin, Kung Jin attacked but failed. Havik was the only one who needed to fight Scorpion. Then after, Frost teleported for her revenge to Hanzo Hasashi, but he was nowhere, Scorpion wanted to face her. Scorpion planned that he needed to bring Frost to Sub Zero so Bi-han and Cyrax wouldn't make more of the Tekunin (Cyber Lin Kuei).

Prologue

Raiden narrated about 10 years ago in MK11, with Fire God Liu Kang defeated Kronika for the Hourglass, he became the new protector of Earthrealm and architect of the Sands of Time and made Kitana as his partner and bride. They have created the new and better timeline, create the new Elder Gods and restore everything as they made the next timeline and the future better (including the past and the present of 27 years ago). Liu Kang and Kitana have learned that no matter how they shape history, they do not plan for every possibility, as villains like Kronika may always turn up. As each realm choose its destiny, they will still face what's coming together. In the dawn of time, Kreenik, who was one of the many titans and keeper of the Hell's Gate, had conversation and battle with Blaze. He then succeeds to defeat him and absorbs his power. Kreenik, however, knew that his beloved wife, Kronika died at the hands of Liu Kang. Plan to resurrect his family, he stole the vials of the Sands of Time from Liu Kang and Kitana to bring back the New Era (the name of rewinding timeline, such as the new timeline), which is under construction. He then takes Shinnok's, Cetrion's, and Kronika's amulets to place and solve the puzzles in the Kytinn Hive of Shang Tsung's Island (which was resurrected). He then places his own amulet the next puzzle for his pet, The Gulcher to consume every mortals in the third timeline.

A mysterious figure in the Rock of Magnus, who is secretly revealed himself as the key of the One Being, spying on Kreenik. He was resurrected after Kronika's defeat and took the 6 artifacts, the Kamidogu with him, which he revived after the third timeline created. Tired of being powerless and weakened, he will grow much stronger when he will be giving his essence by his servent. He will vanish every Kombatants (including Raiden, Liu Kang, and Kitana) and devour the weakened Elder Gods' souls for good, as long as he kept his secrets until he will revealed to someone.

This character stories, retelling the events in the third timeline (from the comic book series of the same name), having an individual storyline for each character. The updated version of Mortal Kombat XII added more character stories for legacy characters from MK9 to MK11 and 3 new characters. It contain 76 character stories in total.

Trivia

• Like Mortal Kombat 11's Story Mode, Sareena and Jacqui Briggs are the only playable characters who are not fought as opponents throughout the Story Mode.
  • However, they can be fought in each character stories.
    • Unless they are playable in Ultimate Mortal Kombat XII as part of the unlockable legacy characters.
• Unless already unlocked via microtransaction, is unlocked by completing Chapter 20 of the Story Mode.
• The Character Stories of Mortal Kombat XII are very similar to Street Fighter V and Soulcalibur VI.
